Every growing freelancer hits the GST question: do I need to register? The answer depends on your turnover, where your clients are, and — more than most guides admit — whether the benefits justify the ongoing compliance load. Here's the honest, complete picture for Indian freelancers and independent professionals.

When Registration Is Mandatory

You must register for GST if any of these apply:

  • Turnover threshold: aggregate turnover exceeds ₹20 lakh in a financial year for services (₹10 lakh in special category states — the North-Eastern states, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and J&K)
  • Inter-state supply of services: relief exists here — service providers under ₹20 lakh are exempt from mandatory registration even with inter-state clients (Notification 10/2017-IGST). Goods sellers don't get this relief.
  • Exports: technically zero-rated supplies, but claiming benefits (LUT route or refunds) requires registration
  • E-commerce platform income in categories where the platform collects TCS

"Aggregate turnover" counts everything — taxable, exempt, and export income across all your activities under one PAN. Wedding photography plus stock-photo royalties plus workshop fees: one combined number.

Voluntary Registration: The Real Trade-Off

Below the threshold, registration is optional. When it's worth it:

Register voluntarily if:

  • Your clients are mostly GST-registered businesses — they can claim your GST as input credit, so your 18% doesn't raise their real cost, and many corporates simply won't onboard unregistered vendors
  • You spend meaningfully on GST-bearing inputs (equipment, software, studio rent) — input tax credit puts 18% of those costs back in your pocket
  • You're near the threshold and crossing mid-year would force a messy mid-stream transition

Stay unregistered if:

  • Your clients are individuals (brides, families, consumers) — they can't claim credit, so GST makes you 18% more expensive than unregistered competitors, or 15%+ cheaper for yourself if you absorb it
  • Your turnover is well below threshold and inputs are light

For most wedding-industry freelancers serving families directly, staying unregistered until the threshold is the rational choice. For B2B freelancers (design, development, consulting, corporate events), early registration usually pays.

The Registration Process

Registration is free and online at gst.gov.in:

  1. Generate a TRN with your PAN, mobile, and email (OTP-verified)
  2. File Part B with documents: PAN, Aadhaar, photo, bank proof (cancelled cheque/statement), and proof of principal place of business (rent agreement + NOC, or ownership document; a residential address is acceptable)
  3. Aadhaar-authenticated applications are typically approved in 3–7 working days
  4. You receive a 15-character GSTIN and registration certificate

No CA is required for a straightforward proprietor registration, though many freelancers use one for the setup plus ongoing filings.

What Registration Actually Obligates You To

This is the part to weigh seriously before registering:

  • Charge 18% GST on every taxable invoice, in the prescribed format, from day one
  • File returns forever: GSTR-1 (outward supplies) and GSTR-3B (summary + payment) — monthly, or quarterly under the QRMP scheme if turnover ≤ ₹5 crore — plus the annual GSTR-9. Nil returns are still mandatory in months you earn nothing; missed filings accrue late fees per day.
  • Receipt vouchers for advances and proper documentation across the board
  • Registration displayed at your place of business and GSTIN on your signage/website per rules

Budget either your own 2–3 hours monthly or ₹1,000–₹3,000/month for a professional. This recurring load — not the registration itself — is the real cost.

After You Register: Set Up Once, Correctly

  • Add your GSTIN to your invoice template and switch to compliant invoices immediately — a GST invoice generator handles format, tax splits, and SAC codes automatically
  • Decide inclusive vs exclusive pricing and update your quotes and packages before your next inquiry (raising a bride's package 18% mid-negotiation goes badly)
  • Start collecting invoices for every business purchase — that's your input credit trail
  • Track collected GST separately from income; it was never yours

A system that tracks bookings, payments, and GST-compliant invoices in one place makes the monthly filing a report-export instead of an archaeology project — Brightdesk handles GST invoicing for Indian freelancers on the free plan.
