The bridal trial is simultaneously your best sales tool and your most abused freebie. Done right, trials convert at 60–80% and pre-sell the whole wedding package. Done wrong — free, unstructured, unlimited — they become a city-wide free-makeover program for brides collecting comparison photos. The difference is policy. Here's how to design yours.

The Case Against Fully Free Trials

A trial costs you 2–3 hours, ₹300–₹1,500 in product, and often travel. An artist doing four free trials weekly spends 10+ hours and thousands of rupees monthly on unpaid work — much of it for brides simultaneously trialing four other artists with no intention filter. Free trials also reprice you psychologically: what cost nothing is worth nothing, and the artist who charged for her trial reads as the more established one.

The Three Workable Models

1. Paid trial, adjustable against booking (the recommended default). Charge ₹2,000–₹5,000 (scaled to your bridal rate — roughly 10–15% of it). If she books, the amount adjusts against her package; if not, your time was paid for. This filters window-shoppers while costing serious brides nothing extra. The framing line: "The trial is ₹3,000, fully adjustable when you book — so it's free for my brides."

2. Free trial bundled into premium packages only. Your top package "includes a complimentary trial"; lower tiers pay per trial. This turns the trial into an upgrade incentive and works well for three-tier package structures.

3. Paid, non-adjustable (premium/celebrity tier). At high demand, the trial is simply a service (₹5,000–₹15,000). Your calendar is the filter; adjustment is unnecessary. Don't adopt this posture before demand supports it.

The model to avoid: free-for-everyone-who-asks. If you're early-career and feel you must, cap it — free trials only for confirmed-date brides, at your studio, weekday slots.

The Policy Details That Prevent Losses

  • Advance payment for the trial itself (even ₹500–₹1,000) — no-shows collapse to near zero the moment money is attached. Trial no-shows are otherwise your biggest silent loss.
  • One look per trial. "Trial includes one complete look with adjustments during the session." A second full look is a second trial fee. Without this line, trials become open-ended experimentation marathons.
  • Studio-first. Trials at your studio/home setup save travel and keep your full kit available; home-visit trials, if offered, carry a travel fee.
  • Time-box it: 2 to 2.5 hours, stated. Structure protects both calendars.
  • Validity: trial pricing/adjustability holds for bookings made within 30 days — decisions shouldn't dangle for a season.

Put all of it in your contract and booking terms — one paragraph covers it.

Running Trials That Convert

Policy gets brides into the chair; conversion is craft:

  • Prepare like it's the wedding: her references reviewed beforehand, outfit photos on hand, the actual planned look recreated — generic glam trials produce "we'll think about it"
  • Document in her light: shots in daylight and flash, sent to her — the decision happens at home, by committee; arm her with good evidence
  • Fix, don't defend: "the eyes feel heavy" gets "let's soften them now," not a lecture — adjustment responsiveness is the product being evaluated
  • Close in the chair: availability honesty ("your date has two other inquiries"), the adjustment reminder ("today's ₹3,000 comes off your package"), and the direct ask. Follow up once at 48 hours, once at a week — then park it gracefully.

Track the Numbers

Three metrics tell you if your trial system works: trial conversion rate (below ~50% → look at pricing fit or trial experience), trial no-show rate (above 10% → your advance isn't real), and revenue per trial hour. Log every trial as a booking with its payment in your booking system — trials are business events, not favors — and the pattern becomes visible within one season.

A written trial policy takes twenty minutes to create and permanently converts your most expensive marketing activity into a paid, filtered, high-converting sales channel. Write it this week; invoice the first trial properly the same day.
