## How the calculator works

1. **Start from what you want to earn**: Your own pay for the year, before income tax. Not what others in your city charge.
2. **Count the weddings you can really take**: Peak season fills up; off-season months do not. Trials, travel days and rest take dates too.
3. **Split your costs in two**: Yearly costs you pay anyway (kit, gear, studio, marketing) and costs each wedding brings (products, travel, assistants).
4. **Add a buffer**: Bargaining, a cancelled date or a balance that never comes. Without it, a normal season leaves you short.

Price per wedding = (what you want to earn + yearly costs + costs per wedding × weddings) ÷ (1 − buffer) ÷ weddings, rounded up to the next ₹500.

## Worked example: a bridal makeup artist

- Wants to earn ₹8,00,000 in the year.
- Can take 40 weddings, covering 2 functions each on average.
- Pays ₹1,50,000 a year for kit restocking, courses and marketing, and about ₹4,000 per wedding for products, travel and an assistant.
- Keeps a 10% buffer for discounts and cancellations.

Bookings must bring in ₹12,33,333 a year, so the floor is ₹31,000 per wedding, or ₹15,500 per function. A 30% advance is ₹9,300. If the artist is GST-registered, the client pays ₹36,580 including 18% GST.

## Why price per wedding, not per hour

A wedding vendor sells dates, not hours. A Saturday in November can only be sold once, and an hour of bridal makeup comes with travel, setup, waiting and touch-ups that no client sees. Hourly maths undercharges for exactly those parts.

So the calculator starts from the number of weddings you can take in a year and works out what each one has to bring in. The per-function price helps when a family books only the mehendi or only the reception.

## Peak season and off-season

Most Indian wedding vendors earn the bulk of the year between October and February, plus a few auspicious dates in spring. Count the weddings you can take across the whole year, not the busiest month times twelve.

If you fill every peak date at this price and still have quiet months, that is a signal to raise peak-date prices rather than discount more.

## GST: quote it clearly

Once your turnover crosses the registration threshold (₹20 lakh for services in most states), you charge GST: 18% for makeup, photography, mehendi, decor and most wedding services, 5% for outdoor catering. Families cannot claim it back, so it is a real cost to them.

Say in your quote whether the price is "+ GST" or GST included, so the tax never appears as a surprise at balance time. Our GST rate guide lists the rate and SAC code for each service.

## The advance

An advance blocks the date and covers what you spend before the event. 30–50% is common for makeup, photography, mehendi and DJs; decorators and caterers usually take 50% because they buy material up front. Below 30%, it no longer stops a client from booking someone else.

Write what happens to the advance on cancellation or date change into your contract.

## Corporate events and TDS

Families do not deduct TDS. A company booking you for an event may deduct TDS before paying you (for example 1–2% under Section 194C for contract work, or 10% under 194J for professional services). You get it back as a credit when you file your income tax return, but plan for the cash arriving later.

## Frequently asked questions

### How much should I charge for bridal makeup?

Start from your own numbers: what you want to earn, your kit and travel costs, and how many brides you can take in a year. Put them in the calculator to get your minimum. Then compare it with your market: in India, bridal makeup ranges from about ₹8,000 for newer artists to ₹75,000 and more for well-known names. If your minimum is above what your market pays, cut costs or move to a segment that pays more.

### Is this price per wedding or per function?

Both. The main number is for one wedding booking with all the functions you cover. The per-function price divides it by your average number of functions, useful when a client books just one event.

### Should my price include GST?

Only if you are GST-registered. Tick the box and the calculator shows the GST and the total the client pays. In your quote, write "+ 18% GST" or "GST included" clearly.

### What counts as a yearly cost and what is a per-wedding cost?

A yearly cost is something you pay even in a month with no bookings: kit restocking, camera wear, studio rent, software, ads, courses. A per-wedding cost only happens because of the booking: products used, travel, an assistant, album printing, flowers.

### Why add a buffer?

Because every season has discounts, a cancelled date and a balance that is paid late or never. A 10% buffer means a normal season still reaches your goal.

### Is my data saved?

No. The calculator runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent anywhere. Sign up for Brightdesk if you want to save your packages and use them in bookings and invoices.
