Free billing software is a preference; free GST billing software is a compliance decision. A GST invoice has legally mandated fields, tax-split logic that depends on geography, and numbering rules an officer can check six years later. Free tools that get this wrong don't just look amateurish — they generate documents your clients can't claim credit against. So the question isn't "what's free?" but "what's free and correct?"
The compliance bar any tool must clear
Before features, verify the tool produces invoices with (Rule 46's list, practically):
- GSTIN of supplier and recipient, with validation of format
- Automatic CGST/SGST vs IGST switching based on place of supply — the single most common failure in free/DIY tools; hard-coded splits produce wrong inter-state invoices
- HSN/SAC columns per line item
- Unique, consecutive serial numbering the tool enforces (not you remembering)
- Taxable value after discounts, tax shown separately, amount in words
- Clean PDF output — the .xlsx/.docx you email can be edited by anyone
Details and a filled example: GST invoice format guide. If a free tool fails any line above, its price is irrelevant.
The genuinely free options
BrightDesk GST Invoice Generator — free, browser-based, no signup: GSTIN fields, SAC/HSN, automatic tax-split by state, branded PDF. Built as the front door to BrightDesk (service-business billing with bookings, advances and payment tracking; Pro ₹99/month) — the generator is free forever; the memory around it is the paid part. Best fit: freelancers and service vendors issuing GST invoices without wanting software setup.
Zoho Invoice — free tier includes GST-compliant invoicing for India (GSTIN, taxes, HSN), templates and apps. Best genuinely-free product in the general category; upsell is Zoho Books. Best fit: general small businesses wanting a free account-based tool.
Vyapar mobile free tier — GST bills with inventory basics on Android, ad/upsell supported; desktop paid. Best fit: retail counters. (Shop-billing comparison.)
Government's offline utilities — worth knowing: the GST portal's offline tools prepare returns, not invoices; and for e-invoice-mandated businesses (₹5 crore+), NIC provides free IRP tooling — but that's a different regime most readers here aren't in.
Excel templates — free and everywhere, including ours-by-description in the Excel GST invoice guide. Honest verdict: workable under ~10 invoices/month if built with proper IF-based tax logic; the numbering and archive discipline stays manual, and that's where Excel setups rot.
What free tiers structurally can't give you
The GST-specific version of the free-software wall:
- The invoice register. GSTR-1 is filed from your invoice list. Free document-makers leave the register to you; month-end becomes reconstruction. Account-based tools (Zoho free, BrightDesk) keep the register — this is the feature that actually saves filing time.
- Advance handling. Service advances trigger tax in the receipt month with receipt vouchers — a workflow, not a document. Event businesses live here.
- Credit notes linked to originals — cancellations/refunds need paper trails referencing original invoices; loose PDFs don't link.
- Filing integration/exports your CA can consume without re-typing.
If none of these bite you yet — low volume, no advances, CA handles everything from your PDFs — free is genuinely enough. Don't let anyone scare you into ₹15,000 software for 6 invoices a month.
Recommendations by situation
- Freelancer/service vendor, GST-registered, modest volume: free GST generator now; move into BrightDesk when advances and client balances need tracking (that day comes with the first busy season).
- Unregistered (under ₹20 lakh): you shouldn't be charging GST at all — use the plain free invoice generator with "GST not applicable," and read when registration becomes mandatory.
- Shop with stock: Vyapar free mobile → paid desktop as volume grows.
- Wants full free accounting: Zoho Invoice, eyes open about the Books upsell.
- Composition scheme: your document is a bill of supply, not a tax invoice — scheme rules here; most tools handle it, verify before relying.
Free GST software is one of the few places in business where the good option really is ₹0 — because correctness is enforced by law, not by price tier. Just make sure the free thing you pick passes the compliance bar above; after that, pay only when you need memory, not documents.
