If your business is GST-registered, Brightdesk creates proper tax invoices. Your GSTIN, the client's details, HSN/SAC codes and the tax are all worked out for you: CGST + SGST when your client is in the same state, IGST when they're in another state. You set up GST once, then choose GST Invoice whenever you need one.
Not GST-registered? You don't need this. Use a Simple Invoice (how to make an invoice).
In this tutorial
Step 1: Turn on GST in your business profile
Go to Settings → Business Profile → Details:
- Switch on My business is GST registered
- Enter your 15-character GSTIN (Brightdesk checks the format)
- Make sure your State is set. It decides whether tax is CGST/SGST or IGST.
- Tap Save Changes
Step 2: Add HSN/SAC codes and GST rates to your services
In Settings → Billing & Services → Services, edit each service, switch on Add GST/Tax Details, and enter the HSN/SAC Code and Default GST %. You only do this once, and every GST invoice picks it up. (Check the correct code and rate for your service with your CA.)
Step 3: Create the invoice and choose GST Invoice
Start a new invoice (from a booking or with + → New Invoice) and under Invoice Type choose GST Invoice (Tax Invoice).
If this option is greyed out, you'll see "Enable GST in Settings → Business". Go back to Step 1.
Step 4: Enter the client's address
A GST invoice needs the client's State, Address Line 1, City and Pincode. For business clients, also add their Client GSTIN (Optional) so they can claim input tax credit.
Step 5: Add items with HSN/SAC and tax %
Add your services. Each line shows the HSN/SAC code and Tax%, which fill in from your catalog. You can still change them for this invoice.
Step 6: Check the tax breakdown
The Invoice Summary shows the Taxable Amount and then either:
- CGST + SGST (half each) when the client's state is the same as yours, or
- IGST (the full rate) when the client is in a different state
followed by Total Tax, any Advance Paid, and Total Due.
| Example | Your state | Client state | Tax on ₹50,000 at 18% |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local wedding | Maharashtra | Maharashtra | CGST ₹4,500 + SGST ₹4,500 |
| Destination wedding client | Maharashtra | Rajasthan | IGST ₹9,000 |
For services like weddings, the place of supply can depend on where the event happens and who the client is. If you're unsure which state to use, check with your CA.
Step 7: Create and share
Tap Create Invoice, preview it, and share it as a link, PDF or image.
